Topics from my brother

My younger brother is the one of the most interesting people I know. He is highly intelligent and very driven. He has an analytical mind that lends itself well to Math and Science. In fact if he hadn’t become a Petroleum Engineer he would have made a hell of a Master Pastry Chef. He is hyper focused and when he worked for me 19 years ago at my Bakery I dare say he was a better baker than I was. The other night when I wrote that I was stumped about what to write he texted me a couple of different topics and told me that his wife looks at him strangely when he brings these topics up and mentioned no one at the golf course wants to share in the discussions with him. I love him. He tells it like it is. One of his topics or questions was why is Table Wine becoming popular again? Little history, when we were growing up and had all of those big German family dinners there was always a gorgeous glass apparatus on the table with wine in it. As I got older I realized it was a wine decanter and it generally held a wine that either my Uncle Val or Uncle Art had tried their hand at brewing. Now I never got to try any of it as I was to young but I always remember wine on the table.

I did a little reading and came across an article from FoodRepublic.com by Ethan Fixwell called—-What’s the difference between Table Wine and Regular Wine and I thought it was a pretty good read. He even lists some pretty affordable wines. But I didn’t really understand the reasoning behind “decanting” a wine so I dug further through the many pages of the internet and some of the reasoning behind decanting a wine is that your trying to keep sediment in the bottom of the decanter and not your glass. Another reason to decant a wine is that you’ve got a young wine that isn’t very “open” and needs to aerate. To me that means, inexpensive. I don’t think you would need to decant a $100 bottle of Beaujolais. I think when your in a restaurant and and are able to order wine served in a carafe versus a whole bottle that it adds something to the dining experience. It makes the dinner seem a little less “restauranty” and a bit more like you’ve joined family for a great meal. Not to mention a lot of table wines are surprisingly yummy. So I think my next adventure is to find myself a restaurant that serves table wine. Should be a fun adventure to share with my husband to bad my brother is so far away because I think it would be fun to share it with him as well.♥

  1. Another win with me Jenn, I love your blog, and look forward to it, I check everyday, but I know you just don’t have the time everyday. Still, I look for it. 🙂
