Farmers Market find for May 11th

I headed out the Farmers Market again this morning and this time my husband came with me. He’s on the radio until right around 8 am and had some things in his office to finish up so we didn’t get there until 9:30 this morning and it was packed. It’s an absolutely gorgeous day in Montana today, sunny and warm. While we were there I decided not to buy any veggies this weekend as I don’t want to cook tomorrow, I mean it is Mother’s Day after all. So instead we picked up some yummy looking pastries for breakfast tomorrow, one is blueberry and the other is cherry. I’ve never tried this particular booth’s pastries but they look really good. While we walked around I did look at a couple of starter plants that the vendors had and I am definitely going to back next Saturday to buy some tomato and herb starts. I don’t have a huge area to put plants in but it’s enough that I can put those and hopefully they will do well as we get a ton of southern exposure.

Because it’s Mother’s Day tomorrow we went and had brunch after the market. I refuse to go out to eat on Mother’s Day no matter how many times my husband asks me. I worked too many Mother’s Days during my time in kitchens and as a waitress plus it’s always a mad house and people are never happy with the service or the length of time it takes to get their food. I mean what do you expect, your going out on the busiest day of most restaurants whole year. We went to a little restaurant called the River City Grill. Neither of us had been there for breakfast before but it was really good. I ordered a pretty simple breakfast of 2 pieces of bacon, 2 over easy eggs and 1 piece of french toast. My husband ordered an omelet with wild rice, Swiss cheese and bacon that was then covered in hollandaise sauce. I’ve been cooking a long time and was a breakfast cook for about 4 years and I’ve never heard of anyone putting rice, let alone wild rice in an omelet. He loved it though. Said it was one of the best omelets he’d ever had. We had to get some grocery shopping done after breakfast so I had to wait until we got home to google wild rice in omelets. I was surprised at how many recipes there were for it. Most of them do call for Swiss cheese and hollandaise sauce. It seems to be a Midwestern thing, popular in states like Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan. I was born and raised in Michigan and I had never seen that on a menu that I can remember. In searching through recipes and articles I did find a Women’s Homemaking guide that was published in a 1915 newspaper that did have mention of adding rice to scrambled eggs and covering it with white gravy so I can only assume that over the years it changed and became what Denny had today. I love how food can metamorphosize as it goes through different time periods and generations, it’s why I love looking at old cookbooks and recipes, there is always something new to me.

I want to wish a happy Mother’s Day to you all and hope you have a lovely day with your Mom or your children. Oh and if you want to look at the menu here is the link to the River City Grill website.♥♥♥
