Simple Things

I had a breakfast meeting this morning which was a continuation of a full day meeting yesterday and at both of the meetings we all shared a meal together. It is always amazing to me how a meal can bring people together no matter how simple it is. During lunch yesterday we went to a local brewery known for its food and I will admit I probably had one of the best burgers there that I’ve had in a long time. It was a bison burger with smoked gouda and a huckleberry bbq sauce. Both the bison and the cheese were locally sourced it was tender, moist and so flavorful. At times bison can be tough and gamey but this had an amazing flavor. I really do believe it was one of the best burgers I’ve had in quite awhile and I can’t wait to go back with Denny. This morning we went to a local diner serving pretty simple breakfast fare and I had a ham and cheese omelet. Again pretty simple but the hashbrowns were super crispy without being over browned or  greasy. The omelet was chock full of ham and cheese and just the perfect consistency of doneness. Breakfast is always a meal I’m most critical of because I cooked breakfast for years as a chef and I know both how simple and fast it can be but also how lazy, inattentive cooks can mess it up. The line cooks at the diner this morning have been doing this for a long time and not only did the meal come quickly and come hot, it was really, really good. Simple things can at times be the most comforting. A well prepared breakfast can in ways be better than a 5 course meal. While bar food can be better than an expensive steak. Simple things can equal simple comforts. Don’t overlook the simple choice because sometimes it can be the best one you make.♥
