Grandma’s Zucchini Bread-part 1

When I was younger, I spent a lot of time with my Grandparents. My Grandma Shead was a good cook, good at basic meals that were hearty and she made do with what she had, including leftovers. What she was great at though was baking. She made the best sour-cream sugar cookies that to this day I haven’t ever been able to replicate and her Angel Food cake that she would cool upside down on a glass coke bottle was so good. Now don’t get me wrong, I know the cake mix was from a box, but she did something to it that again I have never been able to replicate. Every summer she and my Grandpa had a garden and she made zucchini bread and froze it. I have her recipe and I planted a garden this year and I am going to make her bread. Like the rest of her recipes I feel like it won’t taste quite the same but I’m going to try. Having been in the food industry for over 25 years now and written countless recipes of my own, I know there is always that one little thing you add to a recipe or a way you bring it together that happens when you are in the moment that makes your version better, but somehow that little tweak never gets added to the final recipe. I shredded a big monster from my garden last night and I am going to do some baking after work tonight so stay tuned to see if I could get her recipe right.♥

  1. That Zucchini bread is very good. I thought we had this conversation a while back… the recipe wasn’t Grama Shead’s originally, although she did claim it. I gave it to her a long time before you were born, but it wasn’t mine either, it was Grama Rosebush’s recipe that she got from her mother in law….. so it goes back a long way. I am glad it brings back good memories with Grama Shead, but no, not her recipe. Even though she names it “Grama Shead’s Zucchini Bread”. I still make the recipe too, it’s so good. The bottom line is that is the history of the recipe, and a lot of people have enjoyed it. I love you, Aunt Dawn.
