Over the weekend I started to go through my Grandma’s recipe box. It was packed pretty tightly with all kinds of recipes. A lot of them where hand written, but quite a few you can tell she used a typewriter to type up the recipes. There were recipes for Church gatherings, Family gatherings and recipes she had copied from the radio or torn out of a magazine or paper. Some the recipes had the name of the person she got it from and I also found that there were multiple variations on Cherry Pie. So far I have counted 7. Lots of Fried Doughnut recipes and a Hot German Potato Salad recipe to feed 100 people. Now I have to say I loved my Grandma’s Hot German Potato Salad, in fact when I was a chef at a very exclusive Guest Ranch in Montana I made her salad for a hot lunch buffet and the owner of the Ranch happened to be on the property at the time and he came and told me it was the best Hot German Potato Salad he had ever had. I’m including a few of the fun recipes I have found so far.
I found a recipe called Fireman’s Apple Pie, but the thing is, there aren’t any apples in it. It’s made with Rhubarb and a nice dose of cinnamon.
Then there are the Everything Cookies that literally have every thing in them. There aren’t real directions with this recipe except for “Don’t Overbake”
Then there is the recipe for the Hawaiian Coffee Ring. It sounds like a cross between a cinnamon roll and a coffee cake. In fact if I read the directions correctly, that’s what it really is. It’s a yeast dough, like for a cinnamon roll but then part of the dough is put into a “well greased quiche pan” and by well greased I bet my Grandma used Crisco. Then you put part of the filling on the dough and then take the other part of the dough and it gets rolled out into a 24 inch roll. Add filling and then put it on top of the other dough and filling in a ring shape. Bake and then brush with a warm glaze. It Sounds Yummy!
I most likely will have to wait to make this last recipe until my son comes to visit because my husband HATES coconut. His loss though. I can’t wait to share more treasures I have found in my Grandma’s recipes, like White Christmas Pie, it has canned fruit cocktail in it. I will find a yummy one to make this weekend and let you know how it goes. Off to explore more of the recipe box.♥
What a treasure to have! Sounds like a great recipe too!!
